Downtown communities
The peninsula plus its two oldest neighbours — the West End's towers, Strathcona's Victorians and the downtown core between them.
Only 3 of the 22 local areas sit on or beside the downtown peninsula, but between them they hold a remarkable share of the city's rental stock. The West End has been Canada's dense-living prototype since the 1960s; Downtown proper added Yaletown and Coal Harbour condo towers through the 1990s and 2000s; Strathcona, across the viaducts, is the oldest surviving residential neighbourhood in the city.
This is the side of the city where not owning a car is the default rather than a statement — but it is also where strata insurance, leasehold parcels and airspace complexities show up most often, so the paperwork on any downtown purchase deserves more scrutiny, not less.
